Still there are many people who don’t care about their health condition, especially for blood pressure. This post will not focused deeply on the one of the most dangerous disease, the high blood pressure / hypertension, but first I want to invite you to discuss about basic things that we should know about blood pressure. It might be useful for you before it’s too late.
Blood Pressure
In the term of human health, it means the blood pressure on the arteries (blood vessels) when the blood pumped by the heart to all members / parts of the human body. The value is made by taking two sizes and usually there are two numbers to be called. For example doctors said 140-90, then what is the meaning these numbers? The first number (140) shows the upward pressure on arteries due to heart’s pulsation while it is beating, and is called the systolic pressure. The second number (90) shows the pressure when your heart rest / relax, and is called diastolic pressure, or often also referred under pressure.
When you perform a physical / clinical examination to a doctor, there is usually a special tool used by doctors to check blood pressure. The tool to check / monitor the blood pressure is also known as sphygmomanometer. There are digital and mercury manometer, both are still commonly used for clinical examination. The doctor will perform blood pressure checks by having you sit or lie down, because both are the best position to measure blood pressure. Then the doctor will usually be binding the air bag on your right arm unless there are injuries. After that, blood pressure measurements are taken. The difference between systolic and diastolic pressure is called pulse pressure.
Once you know your blood pressure, I think you will want to know whether your blood pressure is low, normal or high. According to Wikipedia this following table shows the blood pressure classification based on the number of measurements for systolic and diastolic pressure:
| Category | systolic, mmHg | diastolic, mmHg |
|---|---|---|
| Hypotension | < 90 | < 60 |
| Normal | 90 – 119 | and 60 – 79 |
| Prehypertension | 120 – 139 | or 80 – 89 |
| Stage 1 Hypertension | 140 – 159 | or 90 – 99 |
| Stage 2 Hypertension | ≥ 160 | or ≥ 100 |
There are some factors that cause high blood pressure. Logically hypertension occurs when your blood vessels constrict, the blood pressure inside the blood vessels will increase. In addition, if the amount of blood flow increased, blood pressure will also increase. High blood pressure or hypertension is one of risk factors for stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure. And the worst case of this disease is death. Therefore, if you can, this disease must be prevented. Make sure you check your blood pressure regularly (if you have a sphygmomanometer you can monitor your blood pressure in your home) and consult with your doctor. At least if you know things about your blood pressure you can control high blood pressure.
